Project Description

According to IMS (2023), the rise of social media platforms and, thus their influence, has led to the increase of problems related to them. A major problem that can be identified is the increasing cases of offensive language that is being used by a number of users. Based on the same research, hate speech and slurs spread through social media profiles, including misogyny, are difficult to be recognized due to the different contexts in which they are presented. The ScrollOff project aims to effectively address the rise of offensive language, hate speech, and misogynistic rhetoric on social media platforms, which perpetuate unhealthy male standards and threaten women’s democratic and human rights. The way to achieve this is by training youth workers to support young people who are exposed to such content, helping them develop critical thinking skills to discern between true and false information, and raising awareness on gender equality and rights violations. Through extensive research, interactive materials and participatory activities, ScrollOff proposes an innovative approach by empowering youth workers to build strong bonds with young people and provide them with the necessary support to counteract harmful messages on social media and beyond.

Impact

The ScrollOff project offers youth workers the opportunity to enhance their skills in supporting young people affected, influenced, or manipulated by gendered-hate speech and disinformation on social media. Through activities such as developing a KeyBook on derogatory terms, creating the ScrollOff portal and conducting National and International Labs, participants will learn to address these issues effectively. Participating organizations stand to benefit from improved knowledge and professional development at a European level, enhancing their services and networking abilities. At local, regional, national, and European levels, the project is expected to increase the capacity of youth workers and organizations to support victims, promote multi-agency collaboration, strengthen EU prevention policies, and foster the integration of youth into a more inclusive Europe.

The Hive 's Role

As part of the ScrollOff project, The Hive is tasked with several key responsibilities within the work packages mentioned. In WP3, The Hive is responsible for contributing to the development and structuring of the ScrollOff portal. This involves developing the outline and draft version of the portal, as well as undertaking the technical development process, ensuring that the platform meets the project’s objectives and requirements. Additionally, The Hive plays a crucial role in WP5, by designing the visual branding for the ScrollOff project and developing dissemination tools to promote awareness of the project’s goals and activities. Furthermore, The Hive is responsible for organizing and facilitating a national debate event in Greece, where they will engage stakeholders, experts, and the public in discussions related to gender equality, youth inclusion, and rights violations on social media. Through the implementation of the aforementioned activites, The Hive contributes to the overall success and impact of the ScrollOff project in combating offensive language, hate speech, and misogynistic rhetoric online.
