EmpowerSDGs: The Collection of Best Practices in Social Inclusion Through Gamification and Sustainable Development Goals

We are glad to announce the completion of a significant research within the Erasmus+ project “EmpowerSDGs: Gaming for Global Impact”. This project focuses on promoting the social inclusion of young minorities in Europe through the use of gamification techniques, in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the start of the project, our partnership conducted extensive research to identify existing projects for marginalised youth across the European Union that use gamification techniques to align with the SDGs. This research helped us understand which areas were being addressed, and highlighted those that needed further attention. The findings will support us in developing a training curriculum for youth workers. The aim is to increase the knowledge, skills and competences of youth workers and to cultivate socially aware EU citizens, with a special focus on supporting vulnerable youth and promoting active dialogue.

Our research identified more than 20 best practices, each of which demonstrates innovative approaches to achieving the SDGs. These findings have been compiled into a comprehensive summary document and an interactive online map, which can be used as a basis for developing new projects. By documenting these practices, we encourage active dialogue and collaboration between partner organisations and European youth, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds.

The main beneficiaries of this research are the project partners, who will gain valuable insights into existing initiatives and increase their understanding and capacity to develop effective training curricula and gamification experiences. Indirectly, youth workers and young people at risk (aged 16-30) will benefit from the materials and resources that will be produced in the following months of the project. In addition, the research targets stakeholders such as policy makers, educational institutions, NGOs and community organisations. These stakeholders will have access to inspiring initiatives, enabling them to develop more comprehensive and effective strategies for youth empowerment and social inclusion through the SDGs.

The research is meticulously organised into four chapters, each highlighting good practices from the participating countries: Spain, Turkey, Serbia and Greece. This structure allows for an in-depth exploration of successful initiatives, providing a roadmap for other organisations to follow. The materials are available in English, Spanish, Turkish and Greek.
